Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said Monday that up to 8,500 U.S. troops are under "heightened readiness" for a possible deployment to aid Ukraine under orders from President Joe Biden.

Kirby said Biden ordered the Defense Secretary to put the troops on alert.
The American troops are expected to aid a NATO response force that has been ramping up to deter Russian forces that have been gathering along the Ukrainian border.
American officials have said that Russia is well-equipped to launch an invasion and that Ukrainian intelligence suggests more than 100,000 Russian troops are near the border.
According to the Wall Street Journal, if the U.S. orders Americans to leave the country, the troops would be placed nearby.
Kirby said at the news conference that the Russians had no intention of deescalating.
As international forces bolster defense capacity in eastern Europe, Biden planned to call European leaders to discuss the Russia-Ukraine situation. The U.S. gave 90 tons of military supplies to the Ukrainian forces. Biden has warned of unprecedented sanctions if Russia launches an invasion of Ukraine, while Putin wants NATO to pull back its forces from eastern Europe. Ukrainian officials claimed that the move by the U.S. to order non emergency diplomatic employees and their families to leave was premature.
CNN has obtained a memo from the Department of Homeland Security that says Russia could launch a cyberattack if the U.S. continues to increase its involvement in Ukraine. destructive attacks targeting critical infrastructure were warned in the memo.

There is disagreement among NATO members about how to respond to a "minor incursion" by Russia, which Biden predicted at a news conference Wednesday. He said that if any Russian units moved across the Ukrainian border, that was an invasion. Russia will pay a heavy price if Putin makes this choice.
