The general director of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, and former chief creative officer at Sega, has announced his next move. NetEase, a Chinese internet and gaming company, is funding Nagoshi Studio, a studio he started.

NetEase was named as Nagoshi's future partner by a report from August, but today's news also follows Nagoshi's departure from Sega last October. The new head of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio is Masayoshi Yokoyama, who was interviewed by The Verge last year about his work on the most recent game in the series, Like a Dragon.

The lead writer on the series is Yakuza.

Several former Sega employees and Yakuza contributors have been hired by Nagoshi Studio, which will be based in Tokyo. The list includes producer Daisuke Sato, artist Kazuki Hosokawa, programmer Koji Tokieda, designer Masao Shirosaki, engineer Mitsunori Fujimoto, artist Naoki Someya, and director Taichi Ushioda.

In an interview with Japanese games magazine Famitsu, Nagoshi goes into some detail about why he left Sega and joined NetEase. He feels like doing something different and wants to create games that appeal more outside of Japan, while noting that the studio's focus will still remain on Japan for the time being. Nagoshi believes that going independent will allow his team to develop games without having to consider the wider business plan and budget of the company.
