The Associated Press reported that an official announcement was made on Monday after commercial flights resumed from the city a day earlier.

Not a single new Covid-19 case was reported from the Shaanxi province or its capital, according to the Chinese National Health Commission.

Beijing introduced new measures to contain a growing outbreak of Covid-19 cases in the capital region just two weeks before it is set to host the Winter Olympics.

Four of the new locally transmitted cases were in the city's Fengtai district.

People living in risky areas were ordered not to leave the city and avoid mass gatherings.

All 2.2 million residents of the Fengtai district were tested on Sunday.

Despite the emergence of the highly infectious omicron variant in Beijing, China has stuck to its zero tolerance strategy towards Covid-19. In areas where local transmission of the virus is detected, swift lockdowns are used followed by mass testing of the affected population. China was able to use this strategy last year to prevent any large-scale outbreak. In addition to this, the country has been aided by a high vaccine take-up with 86.2% of its population being fully protected. The long term usefulness of such a strategy in face of the Omicron variant which is both highly transmissible and has been shown to evade vaccines has been questioned.

The Winter Olympics in Beijing will begin in less than two weeks and will operate under a closed loop system. Athletes arriving in China will have to bevaccinated or undergo a 21-day quark. Everyone involved in the event will be isolated from the rest of China in order to prevent an outbreak. Dedicated transport, housing and training facilities will be included in this system.

A monthlong epidemic was lifted on China.

As cases mount before the Olympics, Beijing introduces more carbon dioxide measures.
