The women's basketball game between South Carolina and Connecticut that was supposed to be played on Thursday has been canceled.

South Carolina will host Ole Miss on Thursday. The Big East game that was to be played in Columbia, South Carolina, was called off.

South Carolina coach Dawn Staley said in a statement that her team enjoys the rivalry with Connecticut. Our goal of another SEC championship is more important to our program than our conference season.

As we approach the second half of league play next month, it has become more important to complete our SEC schedule to keep ourselves in the running for a conference title. This Thursday is one of the few dates Ole Miss has open, so with my team's best interest at heart, I started the conversations that led us to this point.

The game against Ole Miss was moved to January 2.

Geno Auriemma said that Dawn Staley reached out to him about postponing the series. It's a priority for South Carolina to make up SEC games, so this is the best decision for them right now. We look forward to continuing the series with South Carolina, even though a lot of fans were excited for this game.

Thursday's game was the end of a previous agreement between South Carolina and Connecticut. The new agreement was signed last summer.

The two teams have played each other in every regular season since the beginning of the year. South Carolina beat Connecticut 73-57 in the championship game of the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas on November 22.

The game was originally scheduled for December 31. The next nonconference game is Feb. 6 against Tennessee.

South Carolina and Tennessee are the top seeds in the latest edition of the Bracketology. The loss of a high-profile foe such as South Carolina takes away another opportunity at moving up in seeding for the Huskies, who are 6-0 in the Big East and had four conference games postponed between December 29 and January 7.
