Thierry Mugler, Genre-Busting French Fashion Designer, Dies at 73

The outrageous, genre-busting designer who dominated European runways in the late 1980s and early 1990s, died Sunday. He was 73.

He died on his brand's official account. Mr. Mugler passed away on January 23rd, 2022. May his soul rest in peace.

Two of his friends confirmed his death, but both refused to be interviewed. There was no cause of death given.

Mr. Mugler was a principle architect of the late eighties aesthetic that included high fashion and S&M. His silhouette was a kind of inverse triangle with giant shoulders and a nipped waist. He was fond of latex, leather, and curves.

His early muses were Grace Jones and Joey Arias. He had a long-standing creative collaboration with David Bowie, and even dressed him for his wedding to Iman. He went from couture to putting together a successful Cirque Du Soleil show in Las Vegas. He went into semiretirement in the early 2000s, but his perfume remained a huge hit.

Mr. Mugler had a lot to do with Alexander McQueen's punk posh sensibility. Lady Gaga had an early look.

Mr. Mugler was known to have dressed some of the biggest names in Hollywood and beyond, and made something of a comeback in 2019: he dressed KimKardashian for the Met Gala. Mr. Mugler was introduced to millions of new fans by the "wet dress" he designed.

His current creative director said that he was so honored to have known him. You changed our perception of ourselves. I carry your legacy with me in everything I do. Thank you.

Soon, a full obituary will be published.
