A naked snow angel for the Betty White Challenge raises money for Burlington animal shelter

The theme to "The Golden Girls" played in the background as Flietner made a snow angel out of his blue underwear.

The naked snow angel was a tribute to Flietner's friend Betty White.

He said that he would do it again, even though it was the most cold he had ever been in. The snow angel said thanks to Betty White for everything she did for humanity and the animals. She's an angel in my heart.

The beloved actress died just weeks shy of her 100th birthday and left a legacy of both comedy and animal welfare.

Fans honor the late actress on the day she would have turned 100.

To honor her passion for animals, fans started the #BettyWhiteChallenge, asking everyone to donate $5 to an animal shelter or rescue on Monday, what would have been her 100th birthday.

Flietner promised that if he raised $2,000 for the Humane Society, he would strip down to his skivvies and walk around in the snow. He exceeded his goal, and a video was posted to his Facebook page showing donors that he had kept his word.

I'm speechless to all of the people who supported the event. Flietner said that an incredible turnout and support for the shelter made his heart full.

Flietner and his husband had the pleasure of meeting White at a charity dinner, and they described her as sweet and kind.

The marriage of the Burlington couple was blessed by Betty White.

On May 1, 2010, the Flietners married. Since the Iowa Supreme Court's April 3, 2009, ruling that banning same-sex marriage was unconstitutional, 10 gay couples from the Burlington and West Burlington area have married.

The Flietners' marriage was blessed by White during the dinner.

Flietner said that he won an eBay auction through the Morris Animal Foundation. The evening and dinner date was with Betty White. I had to bid on the auction to have the chance to meet an actual Golden Girl, because I am a huge fan of the show.

She was a delight. It was easy to talk with. She held Greg's hand for the entire meet and greet.

He said that White ate no food, but did drink some Grey Goose vodka on the rocks with a twist of lemon.

"My kind of lady," he said.

Other locals would have made Betty White proud.

The shelter was closed on Monday, but people started showing up with donations.

The support we received for Betty White's birthday was wonderful. She said that they raised over $5,000 and received some great donations, including food, blankets, treats and toys.

Donations came at a good time for the shelter.

The shelter housed and fed 36 cats and 20 dogs.

A nice donation in the beginning of the year will help a lot. Rourke-Thompson said that they have had a lot of vet visits with injured animals.

The gray kitten named Martin was one of the injured animals. Martin was given antibiotics during his vet visit and has since been adopted.

The new owner is taking care of him.

The animals are waiting for a home.

The Downtown Burlington welcomed 8 new businesses in 2021.

Rourke-Thompson said that they have over 50 animals that they care for. Daily care alone costs a lot, with cleaning, food and supplies.

The Betty White Challenge will be a yearlyraiser.

It is up to us to keep the Betty White Challenge going, she said.

Burlington's Capitol Theater will add a black box theater, social club lounge, and films for subscribers.

How much money was raised for the Betty White challenge?

More than $2,000 was raised from 61 donors by the challenge posted on the DMCHS Facebook page.

A small portion of the money will go to Betty White.

The shelter on Feb. 1 will have a tree for people to give a tree.

People can pick out a heart ornament with a shelter dog or cat's picture and information. They can come in any time during the week to give the cat or dog love.

"You can always tell about someone by the way they put their hands on an animal," said White.
