You might not want to play a game online for a while. According to The Verge, attackers have discovered a security exploit in Dark Souls 3 that can allow them to remotely execute control and hijack your PC. Streamers like TheGrimSleeper have learned about the damage that can be done when an invader launches Microsoft PowerShell and runs a text-to-speech script.

The exploiter might not have intended to hurt anyone. The hacker was trying to warn the developer of the Dark Souls 3 vulnerability, but instead compromised streamers to highlight the problem, according to a post on the Speedsouls Discord. There is a patch for the unofficial Blue Sentinel anti-cheat tool, but few people are aware of how to use it.

The exploit has been responded to by FromSoftware and its publisher. The player-versus-player server for Dark Souls 3 and its predecessors has been temporarily shut down while the security team investigates the flaws. It's not certain when the server will be back online, but From and Bandai will not restore service until they're confident that players are safe. More sinister attackers could use the flaw to steal sensitive information and ruin systems.

The team is investigating reports of an issue with online services, so the team temporarily shut down the Dark Souls 3, Dark Souls 2, and Dark Souls: Remastered PvP server. PtDE will join them soon.
