Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieira angered by Liverpool penalty

Jota won the penalty by being really smart.

Kevin Friend, the referee, "killed our legs" by awarding a controversial late penalty in Sunday's defeat of Crystal Palace according to Patrick Vieira.

After the VAR told him to check his initial decision not to give a penalty, the friend judged that Diogo Jota was fouled by Vicente Guaita.

Gary Lineker, the Match of the Day host, said the decision was "appalling".

"I'm really angry with the decision," he said.

The Palace boss said that it was never a penalty. The referee made a mistake that had a big impact on the game. The referee should explain the decision to you.

Jota was smart. Football is about contact. The referees tell us that football is about contact and that is part of the game. They've got it wrong now.

The game was there for us to try and get a draw. The referee killed our legs.

Jota thought it was a penalty and the referee went to the screen to make sure, so I am not sure what we are talking about now. Four eyes looked at it.

Is it ridiculous, appalling or just soft?

Fabinho converted the penalty in the 89th after Jota was brought down.

Jota went down in the 85th minute when Palace were trying to get back into the game after a 2-0 lead was lost.

The Portugal forward missed his flick over Guaita and appeared to change direction before colliding with the Spanish keeper.

There was contact but Jota moved towards the goalkeeper.

Lineker said that the decision was appalling. That isn't a penalty. Never in a million years.

Glenn Murray, a former Crystal Palace player, said on Radio 5 Live that he felt as though Jota went to finish the chance, but he completely misses the ball and the momentum takes him towards Vicente Guaita with the ball then running out of play.

I don't understand how Kevin Friend gets called over to the monitor to give a penalty decision. It spoiled a really good game of football, but the result was deserved due to the fact that they controlled large parts of the game.

The decision was soft but a penalty according to Don Hutchinson.
