ECHL suspends Jacob Panetta indefinitely, pending hearing, for racist taunt at Jordan Subban

The Jacksonville Icemen's Jacob Panetta has been suspended indefinitely by the ECHL pending a hearing into what South Carolina's Jordan Subban said was a racist insult on Saturday night.

Rob Concannon, president of the South Carolina Stingrays, said they were disgusted and appalled by the incident involving Jordan Subban. Our organization supports our friend and teammate, Jordan, as well as all other players who are dealing with discrimination. This behavior has to stop.

The Icemen said in a statement that they are cooperating with the review of the incident.

"Our fans, partners and sponsors know our core values and intend to make comments and decisions after the league review," the team said.

The game was in overtime when South Carolina's Andrew Cherniwchan collided with Jacksonville's Justin Kapelmaster. Subban said he tried to fight Panetta. Panetta allegedly made fun of Subban, who is black.

Subban said he punched him in the face multiple times after he made monkey gestures at him.

As soon as I turned my back he started making monkey gestures at me and I punched him in the face multiple times because he was too much of a coward to fight me. There was a fix for it.

The game was won on a power-play goal. The New York Rangers have an affiliation with the Icemen. The Washington Capitals have an affiliation with the Stingrays.

On Saturday night, P.K. Subban, Jordan's older brother, shared a video of Panetta's taunting and called out the ECHL.

My brother and the other black players in the East Coast League are not called the "jungle" because they are monkeys. Jacob Panetta, don't be so hasty with your deletion of your social media accounts. "You will probably be able to play again, that's what history says," P.K. Subban said to his 1 million followers.

Things are changing now. P.K. Subban wrote that not just the hockey world knows your true colors, your hometown of Belleville knows, and your family and friends know you're a fraud. With all due respect to everyone who has an opinion, this isn't a mistake. We all know what's okay and what's not. Your teammates wanted to see you get your clock cleaned. It never gets exposed in the lower leagues.

One day after the American Hockey League suspended San Jose Barracuda forward Krystof Hrabik for 30 games for making a racist gesture, another incident occurred. Hrabik mimicked the movements of a monkey in a taunting gesture towards Imama, who is black.

P.K. Subban is listed as a co-chair of the NHL's Player Inclusion Committee, which will allow Hrabik to take part in training. After missing 21 games, he can apply to the American Hockey League for his return, but a decision will be based on an evaluation of his progress in the necessary education and training.

Racist tauntings in professional hockey continue. Deniskin pantomimed peeling and eating a banana toward a black person. Deniskin was suspended for 13 games.

There have been two racial gestures in the second and third highest leagues in North America in the first month of the new year. Think about how many young kids we don't know about, because the game isn't being recorded.
