Despite being under contract for three more seasons, Sean Payton's status as head coach of the New Orleans Saints is uncertain.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network says that the Saints' head coach has not yet committed to returning in 2022.

The average salary of a coach in North American professional sports is $13 million, according to CBS Sports, and that's why Sean Payton signed a five-year extension with the Saints in 2019.

The deal kept him in New Orleans through the 2024 season. He is the second-longest tenured head coach in the NFL, having just completed his 15th year with the Saints. Bill Belichick has been with New England for 22 years.

In the past, opposing teams have been rumored to be interested in trading for Payton. The talks between the Saints and Colts about a deal broke down, according to La Canfora.

Rapoport said it would be "unlikely" that he would coach another team if he wasn't with the Saints.

Rapoport wrote that this would be a mini-retirement to replenish himself after a season that several people close to him described as incredibly challenging and difficult.

The most successful head coach in Saints history is Payton. The 58-year-old is the franchise's all-time leader in games coached.
The Saints have won seven division titles in the 15 seasons that they have existed. They defeated the Indianapolis Colts in the Super Bowl.
