The University of Hawai'i is looking for a new football coach. Timmy Chang is returning to be the school's next head coach.
Chang was the wide receiver's coach at Colorado State. He's remembered as the record-setting quarterback who rewrote the NCAA record book while in school and helped bring about a pass-happy era of college football.
Todd Graham resigned as the coach of the Rainbow Warriors after allegations of mistreated players.
Chang played high school ball at the Saint Louis School in Honolulu, paving the way for stars such as Marcus Mariota and Tua Tagovailoa.
Chang worked as a position coach at Nevada and Colorado State before joining Jay Norvell at Colorado State. Chang has worked as a graduate assistant at SMU, as well as being the offensive coach at Jackson State.
June Jones, who Chang played for at Hawaii, was offered the job by Hawaii. Jones turned down the job because he was offered only a two-year contract and the school wouldn't let him hire assistants.
According to sources, a plan was needed to have Chang as Jones' successor. The school made public comments critical of Jones' handling of the process and pivoted to hiring Chang as the head coach.
Chang is the second-leading passer in the NCAA's career passing list with 17,072 yards.
