The Pittsburgh Steeler's defensive coach,Keith Butler, announced his retirement Saturday.

The 65-year-old became the team's DC in 2015, spending seven seasons in the role. He was the team's linebackers coach for 12 seasons.

He said in a statement.

It is an emotional day as I announce my retirement from football. I have been a coach in the NCAA and the NFL since 1990 and the time is right for me to walk away after a successful career both playing and coaching the game I love.

I would like to thank the Rooney Family, Bill Cowher, Mike Tomlin, and all the other coaches and players that I have been involved with over my entire coaching career. I look forward to spending more time with my family. I will be cheering on the Pittsburgh Steeler's during my retirement, and I wish them the best of luck.

After seven seasons in the National Football League as a player for the Seattle Seahawks from 1978 to 1987, he became a linebackers coach for the Cleveland Browns. He was the Pittsburgh's linebackers coach in 2003 and spent four seasons in Cleveland.

The Alabama native was promoted to defensive coordinators in January 2015. He was a part of two Super Bowl winning teams.

The Pittsburgh defense ranked in the top 20 in points allowed and yards allowed in the league in the year 2021. The team's rushing defense allowed 146.1 yards per game on the ground. It led the league in sacks.

The search for a new defensive coach will begin now that Butler is out of the picture. Teryl Austin could be promoted instead of going into an in-depth search outside of the organization. The defensive backs have been coached by Austin.
