Steve and Sam are Both Captain America Now, Like They Should've Been

It was only a matter of time before Sam Wilson and Steve Rogers would both return to their roles as the Falcon and Cap, respectively, after Sam Wilson was given the title of Captain America. Steve and Sam will both be Captain America, rather than going back to being the Falcon, because of the upcoming Captain America 4.

Sam will return to the public eye in the upcoming comic Captain America: Symbol of Truth by novelist Tochi Onyebuchi and comic book artistRB Silva. The public perception of Sam as Cap was part of Nick Spencer's run with the character, and Onyebuchi told Entertainment Weekly how he believed it was a well worth returning to. There are so many characters that have yet to interact with Sam as Captain America, what does it mean for the rest of the world to accept a Black Captain America?

Sam investigates a conspiracy that involves uncovering secrets about America that the government would rather not know. As a fan of globetrotting spy thrillers, Onyebuchi couldn't pass up the chance to put Sam in such a plot. Since America has a history of shadowy politics, he wanted to explore how Sam and his teammate would navigate that world in a different way from Steve.

Steve will have a book that is firmly based in America. Jackson Lanzing and Colin Kelley wrote Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty to explore how things have changed since his ice nap and subsequent return. Kelly believed that it could be used as a starting point for Steve to explore the "radical shift" in America. Lanzing acknowledged how they wanted to continue that thread with co-star Bucky Barnes.

Lanzing said that the book would be more about Steve personally than about Captain America, though he still has the title. What does Captain America mean to Steve? What do his friends need from him? He will be looking at what it means to be Steve Rogers in our book.

Lanzing said that the books would be written by all three writers and drawn by Mattia De Lulis, who would draw a conversation between Steve and Sam about their shared duty as Captain America. The two books will explore their respective men grappling with America's legacy and their complicated feelings on the matter. Neither of the Caps can turn his back on America. They think the idea is good and worth fighting for. Both need to wrestle with what that means.

Sam's Symbol of Truth #1 will be released in May, followed by the Steve-focused Sentinel of Liberty #1 in June.
