According to a source, the Baltimore Ravens have fired Don "Wink" Martindale with one year remaining on his contract.
Harbaugh said he and Martindale agreed to move forward in separate directions.
Harbaugh said in his statement that he is proud of what has been accomplished and the work he has done. Don has been a major contributor to the success of our defense since he became defensive coordinators four years ago. He has done a great job. It's time to look for other opportunities.
It's the right time when the moment comes. I am grateful for everything he has done in Baltimore.
The Ravens went from being the top seed in the conference to not making the playoffs in six weeks.
The Ravens led the league in points and yards allowed in each of the first three seasons of Martindale's defense.
Ravens players were shocked that Martindale wasn't contacted for any head coaching vacancies. He is a hot candidate for any assistant coach vacancies around the league after he left the Ravens.
The Baltimore Ravens may look to add four new players to their defense this off-season. The Ravens had 34 sacks this season, which was 22nd in the league.
The team moved Patrick Queen out of the middle of the defense, and that's a concern for the team, as well as the fact that defensive linemen Calais Campbell and Brandon Williams are entering free agency.
The secondary needs a playmaking safety.
