The smooth penguin head zooms through their tight swirling mass within blue-green waters as sardines scatter wildly. On the second swoop through, one of those silver sardines becomes the penguin's dinner.
The penguin body cam footage helped clarify the bird's feeding ecology.
The seabird community in the Beagle Channel rely on sardines. This is the actual proof, and now it is confirmed with a star behind the camera: the penguin.
Wow! The penguin takes selfies while it dives and feeds.

The #EarthStrong was announced by the WCS Newsroom on January 18, 2022.
The world's third-largest penguins are up to 90 cm in height. The sub-Antarctic islands are home to these lovable waddlers. They are notorious for stealing pebbles from other penguins' nest.
The penguin can swim up to 22 miles per hour and can dive up to 300 feet deep. They're thought to use their diving ability to look for crustaceans and squid. The video shows they will be able to catch some fish closer to the surface.

Raya Rey is studying the Gentoo colonies in Argentina to better understand how changes in their environment affect them. Climate change appears to be increasing the range of this penguin, unlike other species.
This doesn't mean they're immune to other threats, like expected increases in krill fishing as we adapt to new ways to feed human populations or toxic blooms and diseases invading waters that were once too cold for such threats to thrive.
If they rely more on small pelagic fish like sardines, they may be impacted sooner like other penguin species already have.

The amateur filmmakers seemed unperturbed by its scientific assignment.
Raya Rey said the device was attached for one trip. We monitored the breeding success of the nest after the penguin returned. The Gentoo took care of the offspring.
