There is a key background.
Last year, critical race theory became a legislative priority for Republicans after it became a culture war talking point. The theory claims that American governmental entities are biased against people of color. Critics, led by former President Donald Trump, have blasted critical race theory, claiming it's politically driven by left-wing activists and doesn't accurately reflect American history. Trump signed an act to promote "patriotic education," which downplayed slavery's role in U.S. history, while venerating the nation's founding fathers, and last year claimed teaching critical race theory borders on "psychological abuse" of children. There is scant evidence critical race theory is being taught in U.S. classrooms, despite the fact that it is ill defined as an academic framework.
