The FBI said Friday that Brian Laundrie wrote in a notebook near his body that he was responsible for the death of his fiancée, who disappeared during a cross-country road trip last year.

The FBI said in a statement Friday that it had identified one person who was involved in Petito's death, and that it was Laundrie.
The FBI revealed for the first time Friday that a notebook found near Laundrie's remains contained "written statements" by Laundrie claiming responsibility for Petito's death.
The investigation into Petito's death is drawing to a close after the agency met with his family.
The Petitos thanked the FBI in a statement Friday, saying the investigation leaves no doubt that Brian killed Gabby.
The Laundrie family wrote in a statement that they hope each family can begin to heal after the case is over.

The family of Petito reported her missing in September of 2021. Laundrie was reported missing by his parents more than two weeks after he returned home alone, after Petito and Laundrie left for a cross-country road trip together. The Bridger–Teton National Forest in Wyoming, where Petito and Laundie were seen together, was where her death was ruled a likely homicide. The remains of Laundrie were found on October 20 in Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park in North Port, Florida, along with his belongings. Laundrie died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The FBI has confirmed that the body found in Wyoming is that of Gaby Petito.
