Apple is good at what they do. They make products that are easy to set up and use, but before you know it, you feel trapped in their system. For a lot of us, that is not that bad; the system has a lot of perks, and life seems good here. It can seem like it's impossible for us to find another tech opportunity. Your texts would be green if you wanted a flip. Just do it. Go ahead and do it.
I get it, making the jump from the phone to the phone seems monumental. Apple puts real-life obstacles in your way when you swap phones. If you connect your number to a non-Apple phone, you lose the ability to send and receive calls to those digits. If you have other Apple products, your friends can still use those methods to get in touch with you, but they have to reach out via your connected Apple ID email.
That is a pain in the ass for many reasons. Your non-Apple devices are likely not as connected as a phone is. If you don't have a cellular iPad, you'll need to connect to the internet before you can use it. Even if you kept your devices connected to your new phone's hotspot, the setup is less convenient than just having an iPhone connected at all times.
If you have an Apple device, get ready for it to no longer work. AirDrop, Handoff, and other Apple perks are going to be gone if you switch to an Android device. You will have to re buy games and apps if you bought them through your Apple ID because they are stuck on the platform.
So what?
It's possible to switch from the phone to the phone.
If you want to try another phone, if there is a new piece of tech that looks so cool, and if a company offers features that Apple cannot, then do it. It will not be the end of the world. People who have turned the group chat green have made every reaction in text. There are jokes, but your phone is cool. It does things that your friends can't. It is yours. Who cares?
Do your best to convince your friends to use a third-party chat app. It can be difficult to switch chat apps, especially en masse. If you pick a platform that most of them are already on, it can help. In many cases, that will be a Meta property, and you should useWhatsApp or Facebook Messenger for rich text and video calls even if you don't have a phone.
You will find it easy to switch to a different account if you use a Google Account. It is a bit like having your toe in the water. You might feel right at home on your new phone if you already use services like Google Photos. It's one of the perks of being free to download, that most subscriptions you have through iOS can be accessed on their Android counterpart without any extra costs.
I have outlined some tips to make the transition easier.
There is a lot of phones out there. Each year, new features and options are added to devices made by Sony, and others. If you are in the market for a new phone, and one of these catches your eye, go for it! If you miss it, you can always switch back to the phone.
Maybe Apple will make their OS less exclusive if more of us buy the phones we want, rather than stick to specific platforms. I don't know if we'll ever see true iMessage on Android, but if Apple could just support RCS, we could have easy text chats among all phones.
