Wayne Rooney 'flattered' to be linked with vacant Everton role

The 36-year-old had two spells as a player at the Toffees, coming through the youth ranks before returning towards the end of his career.

Rooney said that he was aware of the speculation, but that there had been no official approach.

He said that he was a fan of the club.

"I'm flattered to be brought up in those conversations, but I know that they have to go through the administrators of Derby County."

Rooney made his first-team debut at the age of 16 and has excelled as a manager.

The club was docked 21 points for entering administration and breaching financial regulations but Rooney has given them a chance of survival. They are within eight points of escaping the bottom two places.

The American Binnie family made a formal offer to buy Derby.

Rooney is one of a number of people linked with the job.
