Apple to Stop Including EarPods With Every iPhone Sold in France From Next Week

According to a notice posted by a French carrier, Ear Pods will no longer be included with every iPhone sold in France. A French law that required every phone sold in the country to come with a "handsfree kit" made it necessary for Apple to include Ear Pods in the box.

In order to reduce its environmental footprint, Apple stopped including Ear Pods and the power adapter from the box for the iPhone 12 in 2020. The box was made thinner with both accessories removed. The items were removed from the older models.

Despite Apple's announcement, the company was required to continue shipping the phones in France. According to French law, Apple's obligation to include the Ear Pods was based on the precautionary principle because the risks of exposing developing brains to electromagnetic waves are not clearly known.

That's about to change. According to a notice posted by French carrier Fnac, Ear Pods will no longer be included in the box when the iPhones are shipped on January 24. A machine translation of a poster.

DEAR CUSTOMERS.
>
In France, our manufacturers are no longer required to supply headphones or hands-free kits with their phones. The law was adopted in late 2021.
>
Products purchased from the week of January 17, 2022, are concerned. The Apple brand will be the same as of January 24, 2022.

Thank you for your understanding.

Ear Pods are listed as an item in the box with the phone and the cable for the Lightning port, although this will likely be updated soon. The Ear Pods were removed from the box, but the headphones' price was reduced to $19 from $29.

In other countries, Apple's decision to remove Ear Pods from the box was controversial. In Brazil, Apple was fined $2 million for not including the power adapter with their phones.
