Pat Gelsinger, the CEO of Intel, is expecting to become the largest Silicon manufacturing location on the planet after the company revealed its plans to build a massive facility in Ohio. The company wants to build a $20 billion site on a 1,000-acre land in New Albany, Ohio, on the outskirts of Columbus. The property that Intel plans to build two fabrication plants on would employ 3,000 people. The site will be built this year and Intel expects the Fabs to be up and running by the year 2025.
The White House discouraged Intel from ramping up chip production in China, according to a report. The administration wants companies to make chips in the US in order to address the global shortage. Companies have been lobbying the president to fund their research. It's worth noting that since building new plants takes years, projects like this won't be able to help address supply chain shortages anytime soon.
Intel chose Ohio because it had all the space it needed for the facility. Amazon's plans to build a second headquarters in NYC were killed because the company doesn't want to build in places where it could displace residents. When the fabrication plants are done, Intel will use them to make its own chips and chips for clients. When it was announced that it was building two factories in Arizona, it also cost Intel $20 billion.
The chipmaker has the option to expand the Ohio site to as many as 2,000 acres and to build as many as eight more Fabs in the future, according to Gelsinger. The CEO told Time that they helped establish the Silicon Valley. We are going to do the Silicon Heartland.
