The New York Times reported that 129 passengers paid a steep price when a masked disruptive customer forced American Airlines flight AAL38 to turn around and go back to Miami. After the flight had traveled 500 miles, the reversal occurred off the North Carolina coast.
American Airlines said in a statement that a woman in her 40s was refusing to comply with the federal mask requirement.
The passenger was escorted off the plane by MDPD officers after the plane made it to the gate. According to CNN, a police detective said that the passenger was dealt with by American Airlines staff.
