Pilot YouTuber Being Investigated for Crashing His Plane

The pilot of a plane that crashed in the California mountains last month was accused of doing the whole thing on purpose to grab some page views. He is being investigated by the feds.

The Drive reports that a former Olympic snowboarder turned social media star crashed a Taylorcraft BL64 plane into the foothills of the Los Padres National Forest, filming the entire episode as it occurred. Jacob, who has been making snowboarding videos for awhile, claims that he was forced to abandon the plane he was on when it suddenly stopped working. Jacob forced the plane to nose-down before jumping out with a parachute after escaping.

Jacob uploaded a 17-minute video to his YouTube page titled "I Crashed My Plane", which captures his escapade from a sunny takeoff, to his realization that the plane is in trouble, to his dive out of the plane door and the release of his parachute.

Jacob plummets through the air with the help of a selfie stick and plane-mounted cameras, while the doomed aircraft descends lower and lower, finally barreling into the side of a hill. Jacob is forced to hike through the wilderness until he is picked up by someone in a truck. Jacob had a video that had more than a million page views.

It didn't take long for the internet to become suspicious of Jacob's narrative, and since then there have been videos on YouTube that critique the pilot's story. Many of Jacob's decisions have been questioned by aviation professionals. One expert suggested that the vehicle could have been piloted for another 15 to 20 miles if the need to jump from the plane had been avoided. Jacob made a claim in the video that he flies with a parachute, but it was later found to be false by a number of viewers who noted that he isn't wearing a parachute in most of his videos.
