What should Las Vegas Raiders do with the perplexing, polarizing Derek Carr?

The Las Vegas Raiders' final possession in their last game of their first playoff appearance in five years was an example of quarterback Derek Carr's eight-year career.

It's a lot of numbers and years to digest. Exactly.

It's easy to get lost in the numbers when trying to break down the most polarizing player in franchise history, and what his future with the Raiders might hold.

The deck has always been stacked against him, from lack of a true No. to the fact that he's had six walk-off wins and 30 career game-winning drives.

Carr is what he is, a solid, upper-half of the league QB who has lost 14 more games than he's won in his career on the other side of 30 who might have hit his ceiling. The Raiders know what they have.

Deebo Samuel created his own position.

Should we believe Eagles?

Will the Browns stick with him?

The Saints continue to be haunted by 'no-calls'.

Flores is a name to watch for the Giants.

All of which raises the question of whether the Raiders will stick with a known commodity in Carr if Mark Davis steps away from Rich Bisaccia.

Carr signed a record five-year, $125 million contract extension in the summer of last year. There have been rumors of another extension, but nothing has happened yet.

In one corner, the Raiders were able to pull a card on Mack. The team assumed the former defensive player of the year would play on a $13 million option with the team making him the league's highest-paid defensive player in 2019. The Raiders traded Mack to the Chicago Bears.

Las Vegas could potentially take care of Pro Bowl defensive end Maxx Crosby and receiver Hunter Renfrow with extensions first, then have Carr play the final year of his deal, which pays him more than $19.8 million and has no dead money, and then dangle a $35-million-or- There is no long-term commitment.

Crazy talk? Quarterbacks don't play on expiring contracts. It would be disrespectful to Carr.

In the last 25 years, a quarterback has played under a franchise tag four times: Drew Brees for the San Diego Bolts in 2005, Kirk Cousins for the Washington Wizards in 2016 and the Dallas Cowboys in 2020.

It takes Carr at his word. He said that he is not in the NFL for financial gain. He wants to win. He would let his voice be heard in a different way, rather than making demands at dinner with team executives.

If I had to play for someone else, he would probably quit football.

Carr contemplated retirement after his first season as a full-time pastor.

He said he was a Raider for his entire life. I will root for the Raiders for the rest of my life. I don't need a perfect situation in order to make things right.

If I have to, I would rather go down with the ship.

Raiders HQ was a bit surprised by that last statement. Davis, the new GM and whoever the coach is will have a bargaining chip that is not at all offensive.

While a new GM and coach may be more comfortable with a new situation with a known commodity at quarterback, they may also want to start fresh. Carr could be an attractive trade target for several teams, with valuable draft picks for a Raiders team looking more to reload than rebuild.

The Raiders were 1-for-5 inside the red zone in their 26-19 playoff loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. They finished 27th in the league in red-zone efficiency this season, and the tease of a ending was a sign of how Carr's tenure with the Raiders would end.

Carr spiked the ball with 30 seconds to go and no timeouts. There was a communication issue at the time. "I think we would have been better off trying to stop the play," he said.

Carr threw the ball to Jones in the middle of the field in the end zone. The pass was close to being picked off.

Carr threw a pass to Renfrow in the left corner of the end zone. The football hit the turf when Renfrow fell.

Carr went back to Jones and threw a pitch to him. Carr critics complain that he throws short of the sticks and throws the ball away on fourth down when he's short of the end zone. He was stopped by Germaine.

Carr became the first Raiders quarterback since Jim Plunkett in 1983 to throw for at least 300 yards in a playoff game, but he was only 4-of-17 in the red zone.

Carr's ninth turnover in the fourth quarter or overtime this season, including the playoffs, was his league-high.

As polarizing as Carr is, he is just as baffling.

Carr was talking about the future after the loss.

He missed the one-game playoff trip with a broken ankle after the 2016 season.

Carr said that they came back arrogant. We didn't work as hard and had a better team. The drive now is to make sure that doesn't happen. I felt like I was on fire. I have to play in the playoffs.

But for who?
