After the United States' first appearance in the World Cup in 40 years, forward John Harkes signed with a second-division English club. That was a big deal. Europe wasn't paying much attention to the U.S. player pool. Tab Ramos and Eric Wynalda both played for Real Betis in the mid 1990s, as well as Claudio Reyna for Manchester City. The signings were not very large. It was easy to keep track of them.

Fans of American men's soccer have too many players to keep track of in Europe. With six matches remaining for the USMNT, and with the qualification process entering the home stretch, let's look at which Americans are thriving overseas.

How is the core doing?

The team has shown an abundance of caution on the road, losing at Panama and drawing at El Salvadoran, but playing mostly exciting ball at home. If the U.S. finishes in the top three and New Zealand finishes in the top two, the U.S. will play in a June inter-Confederation playoff against the winner of the Oceania Championship.

Berhalter hasn't seen his core lineup on the pitch in a long time. Injuries have prevented the quintet of attackers from playing together in qualification. Is that going to change soon?

We're waiting to see if Weston will play in the World Cup for the U.S.

Weston McKennie is from Juventus. He has been the most important player for the USMNT because of how much he has controlled the middle of the field and because of how frequently he has been out. In the past week, he has scored two goals and created 18 chances, recording 73 ball recoveries and creating 18 chances. After a rough patch in October and November, he and his team have gained steam, taking 20 points from its past eight league matches and losing only to Inter in the Italian Super Cup.

Christian Pulisic is a member of the club. The good news is that Pulisic is playing. Injuries and form issues limited him to a minimal part of the rotation for a while, but over the past two months he has played over 800 minutes in 15 matches for the Blues, and with the club battling some severe injury issues, he has.

The good news is that he's scoring twice with two assists, but he's not producing a ton because of the lack of a stable role. After a slow start to the season, he is currently averaging 0.46 xG+xA, nearly equal to last season's 0.48 but still inferior to the 0.63 he produced during an ultra-promising 2019. He's not in his best form yet, but things are moving in the right direction.

Tyler Adams is a football player. It says something about how young Adams is that he feels like a veteran. He has shown a proclivity for putting out fires and has been logging minutes. He has had a lot of fires to put out. RBL has excelled in winning duels and intercepting passes, but he has struggled in transition defense.

Sergino Dest is in Barcelona. The young man's second season at Barcelona has been odd. Dest has played in an offense-friendly right-back role and has produced 22 chances and 5.2 xG+xA. But he has battled a number of injuries and missed time with a positive COVID-19 test in early January, and Barcelona's new manager, Xavi, doesn't appear sold on the youngster. Dest has been the subject of transfer rumors, but the club recently welcomed 38-year-old Dani Alves back. He is a dangerous player for the USMNT in attack, but his club future is in doubt if he is healthy.

Gio Reyna is a player for the club. The wait continues. The 19-year-old has yet to play since he suffered a hamstring injury in the first World Cup qualification match.

After moving to Europe, he has seized his chance for the USMNT and offers a dynamic alternative to more established stars.

Red Bull Salzburg has a person named Brenden. Injuries to Pulisic and Reyna opened the door for him at the national team level. Only Adams has played more minutes for the U.S. in World Cup qualification. He has produced strong form for Salzburg despite a disappointing finish, scoring two goals in the playoffs, dishing the ball for four assists in league play and recording monstrous levels of pressure. The 21-year-old has found himself in the Red Bull system, a good incubator for developing talent, and his performance for the U.S. has alleviated the burden created by key injuries.

Robinson is from Cottager. In World Cup qualification, the left-back has played over 500 minutes and leads the U.S. with nine chances created. He's playing a key role in the transition at the club level. He has two goals and four assists for the best attack in England's second division, and his 139 ball recoveries is the most in the Championship. He's a major reason why the second division might be short lived.

The man is from Manchester City. The battle for the first-choice U.S. keeper is still going on with Matt Turner. In six matches for City, he has recorded 1.6 goals prevented (xG for shots on target conceded minus actual goals conceded), with a 76% save percentage. He has given up two goals in three World Cup qualification matches, but one was an absolute screamer from Jamaica's Michail Antonio.

The grade is incomplete.

Center-forward is not one of the best positions for the U.S., but two promising youngsters have made January moves overseas.

They are both from West Bromwich Albion. The new clubs have combined for only three matches and three shots, zero goals and two chances created by Dike andPepi. The two have the same strengths and weaknesses, but they still have work to do when it comes to link-up play and shot creation. Both have great opportunities to make headway.

Dike's best goals from the MLS season can be seen as he takes his talents to The Championship.

Americans are getting their feet wet with new clubs. On Tuesday, defender/midfielder James Sands made his Rangers debut, Dante Polvara signed with Scotland's Aberdeen, and Chris Muller joined Scotland's Hibs.

The stock is rising.

Things change quickly in the American player pool. A year ago, it wouldn't have seemed plausible that a player who made his USMNT debut in September would become the first-choice forward by October and join the Bundesliga in January. His name isn't the only one on the rise. Quite a few young Americans have made the most of European moves, and some seem like more realistic options for a trip to Qatar than they were a few years ago.

Joe was from Monchengladbach. After making just four appearances for NYCFC, the full-back made his first-team debut this fall and became a regular presence in the lineup. He's made 21 appearances, scoring once, creating 18 chances, winning 54% of his duels, and proving solid on both the left and right. He's making himself hard to ignore, even though he hasn't appeared in World Cup qualification.

Since moving to the Bundesliga, Joe Scally has risen from a prospect to a first-team regular.

There is a person named Gianluca Busio in Venezia. When he was acquired by Venezia in August, the 19-year-old Busio seemed like the type that might need to bulk up and ease his way in. Nope! While he's still got some catching up to do physically, he's a safe ball-progressor who steps well into opposing passing and has already made 20 appearances in Italy. If he can hang in Italy, he can hang in other countries.

Chris Richards is from Hoffenheim. Hoffenheim was where the 21-year-old spent most of the year in search of playing time. It seems to be working. Richards has been a major component of Hoffenheim, showing major aerial prowess and winning 61% of his duels. He's played in three World Cup qualification matches and recorded over 180 minutes.

If the U.S. qualifies for the World Cup, Richards could play himself into a spot.

The latest highlights and debate the biggest storylines are brought to you by Dan Thomas. You can stream on the U.S. only.

Mark McKenzie is from Genk. In the first 180 minutes of qualification, he has played 90 at left-back and 90 at center-back, and both his league form andVersatility could keep him in the rotation. His play for Belgian powerhouse Genk has been a bright spot, but his team has disappointed a bit, but he's proven to be an important player in both intervention and in the build up play.

A few others are in good shape. Luca de la Torre has created 18 chances in his time with Heracles, while Sam Vines has established himself as a strong defender for Royal Antwerp.

The stock is falling.

If the U.S. qualify for the World Cup, Josh Sargent is an outside shot because he hasn't found his form since joining Norwich.

Josh Sargent is a player for Norwich City. The rise of Dike andPepi seems to coincide with a fall of sorts for the 22-year-old Sargent, who moved from Werder to the potentially soon-to-be-relegated Canaries. He managed just five goals and two assists in 2,518 minutes in the German league last season, but has yet to record a goal or assist in over 1000 minutes in the English league. He scored twice against Bournemouth in the League Cup. He's getting plenty of reps and could still make this move work, but it hasn't yet.

Greuther Furth and Julian Green. One of the major pieces of Furth's promotion run last season was the 26-year old Green, who scored nine goals with 36 chances created and was in position to potentially force himself into the American rotation. He's played in only 11 of Furth's league matches and created nine chances. He scored in cup play.

Furth has played only 27 minutes since the start of December, and Green's role as a ball progressor has been taken away by the fact that Furth never had the ball to progress.

Musah is in Valencia. The story of Musah has been interesting. He's made 54 cup and league appearances for Valencia since his September 2020 debut, but he hasn't produced a ton of goals or chances, and in just 461 league minutes this season he has zero goals and just four chances created. Over the last year, he's created eight chances with two assists for the national team. One assumes he's still high on the priority list for Berhalter because he pairs well with the physical McKennie. His league form makes that a bit of a leap of faith.

Tim Weah is from Lille. The 21-year old Weah has made more of an impression with his country than he has with his club. In the November qualification window, he was brilliant against both Mexico and Jamaica, recording a goal and an assist and seemingly playing at a different speed than everyone else on the pitch. He hasn't scored for Lille since February. He is creating a decent number of chances, so his stock isn't really down, but he hasn't made the most of his time with the defending French champion.

There are more young Americans in France who are struggling to stand out. In 295 minutes as a Montpellier sub, Nicholas Gioacchini has contributed a couple of assists, but has yet to score in six shots, while Konrad De La Fuente started out well at Marseille, but has yet to score in six shots.

In 776 minutes thus far, Alex Mendez has created 12 chances, but has no goals or assists. In 630 minutes with Busio, teammates withTanner Tessman, he has provided a few pressures but not a lot of other contributions.

Serviceable veterans.

While the USMNT is enjoying a wave of contributions from younger players, there are still some veterans who are putting together decent seasons and holding out hope for inclusion in a theoretical World Cup squad later this year.

John is from Wolfsburg. In World Cup qualification, the assumed member of the roster,Brooks, played only 135 minutes due to iffy form. While they finished fourth in their group, and 14th in the table, they have still been terrible this season, and they have only pulled one point from their last seven matches. He's still solid in the air (61% aerial success rate), good at stepping in front of progressive passes, good at being physical but avoiding fouls, and vulnerable to quick transitions at times.

Berhalter has a lot of interesting center-backs to consider, but he will likely stick with the one he has.

One of the few active players who went to the World Cup for the US was DeAndre Yedlin.

Yedlin is from Galatasaray. With Dest limited by injury, Yedlin has played a larger role than expected in World Cup qualification, recording 361 minutes in seven matches. The 28-year old is a fast option for Galatasaray. He is an anti-Dest, but he is less effective in ball progression. Berhalter still appreciates him, and he's solid enough to play for the Turkish heavyweights.

Jordan Pefok is a young boy. In the spring of 2021, Pefok made a number of appearances for the U.S. He didn't score a goal in the first two qualification matches but hasn't been called up since. He scored 11 times in 17 matches in the Swiss Super League and scored twice for Young Boys in the European Championship.

If Dike and Pepi do well in their new clubs this spring, it might be difficult for Pefok to work too far up the pecking order in 2022, but he remains sturdy and sound.

There are quite a few veterans still carving out solid roles in Europe, from defenders Matt Miazga and Shaq Moore, to fullbacks Timmy Chandler and Reggie Cannon. Moore has been in World Cup qualification play.

Still waiting for the shot.

It can be hard for a young player to adapt to a new club. Many are waiting their turn, from PSV Eindhoven's Richy Ledezma to Caen-via-Manchester City's Erik Palmer-Brown, but let's focus on two in particular.

Matthew is from Mallorca. On January 9 last year, Hoppe came out of nowhere to score a hat-trick and lead the team to a victory that ended their 30- match winless streak. He scored his first goal for the US in the Gold Cup against Jamaica at the age of 20. He joined a LaLiga club by September. It was a bit of a rush, but all of the energy has stopped since. He's only made four appearances for Mallorca, and he's created three chances and tried two shots, but he's still waiting to make an impact.

Bryan Reynolds is from Rome. It wasn't necessarily a good sign for the 20-year-old Reynolds when Jose Mourinho took over at Roma, because he wasn't known for leaning heavily on young players. In the 2020-21 season, he played over 300 minutes, but only played one in the following two seasons. He has been the subject of many loan deals this January, but none have come to fruition. He didn't play again until December's friendly against Bosnia & Herzegovina, after making his USMNT debut in March 2021.
