Atlanta DA seeks special grand jury in Trump election interference probe

The top prosecutor in Atlanta asked a judge to impanel a special grand jury to investigate efforts by then-president Donald Trump to sway the outcome of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia after results showed that President Joe Biden won that state.

The district attorney said that a special grand jury was needed to get the testimony of witnesses who wouldn't cooperate with her investigation.

In a letter to Fulton County Superior Court Chief Judge Christopher Brasher, the head of the probe said that there was a reasonable probability that Georgia's election in 2020 would be disrupted.

The Associated Press reported earlier this month that the district attorney is looking at a call that Trump had with the Georgia Secretary of State.

The top election official in that state was urged by Trump to find enough votes to overturn his loss to Biden.

I just want to find 11,780 votes, that's all I want to do.

The resignation of Atlanta's top federal prosecutor on January 4, 2021, and a November 2020 call to Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., a Trump ally, are being investigated.

A number of witnesses and prospective witnesses have refused to cooperate with her investigation without a grand jury subpoena that would compel their testimony, according to her request Thursday.

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, an essential witness to the investigation, has indicated that he will not participate in an interview or offer evidence until he is presented with a subpoena by my office.

A special purpose grand jury wouldn't have the authority to issue indictments in the case, according to the prosecutor.

She wrote that it may make recommendations regarding criminal prosecution.
