A slap on the wrist and a $25,000 fine is not a lot for a player who makes over 30 million dollars a year. Fans can't expect to insult athletes without getting a response.

Irving's relationship with the fans of the team will always be complicated.

In the 2016 NBA Finals, the 6'2" guard hit the biggest shot in the history of the franchise, giving the Cavs their first title.

The triumph doesn't come without Irving performing like he did, even though he was named the Finals Most Valuable Player.

The 29-year-old burned a lot of goodwill in Northeast Ohio when he left the Cavaliers. He called Boston a "real, live sports city," a dig at the city of Cleveland.

Irving has become a polarizing figure because of his comments on the vaccine.

Over time, the anger from the fans toward Irving could be forgiven. He deserves to have his jersey in the rafters of the field house.

Four-plus years isn't enough to mend fences.
