Mercedes-Benz will integrate lidar sensors into future production vehicles.

A total of 1.5 million shares have been acquired by the German automaker. Mercedes-Benz is buying less than 1 percent of the company, based on the share price of $13.45 at market close January 19th.

Lidar is a laser sensor that can detect the shapes of objects. Without the help of a network connection, this helps vehicles see other objects on the road, like cars, pedestrians, and cyclists.

Mercedes-Benz plans to integrate lidar sensors into its vehicles.

There is a lot that we still don't know about Mercedes-Benz's plans to integrate lidar sensors into its production vehicles. The automaker wouldn't say when it would integrate the lidar into its vehicles, which models would get the laser sensor, or what kind of capabilities it would enable.

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class and EQS sedans will come with the Drive Pilot advanced driver assistance system, which the company says is capable of Level 3 automation. Mercedes claims to be the first to secure internationally valid system approval for conditionally automated driving. The feature will not be available in the US.

The Society of automotive Engineers defines a level 3 as meaning the driver's supervision is not required in a highly controlled setting. The driver still needs to be ready to take control at a moment's notice, leaving it somewhere between Level 2 advanced driver assist systems and Level 4 fully driverless vehicles.

A lot of companies claim to be releasing Level 3 capable vehicles in the next few years. The company said it will allow its vehicles to drive themselves on certain highways without any human supervision once it gets the go-ahead from the state.

Most companies are working on Level 4 technology and skipping Level 3. Level 3 is seen as potentially dangerous because drivers will be confused about when they need to take control of the vehicle.

There is a data sharing angle to the partnership between Mercedes and Luminar. Austin Russell, the company's CEO, said the ability to collect data from Mercedes' vehicles will help improve his company's software.

One of the largest fleets of vehicles in the world is operated by Waymo, a company under the umbrella of Alphabet. He said the ultimate goal was to have hundreds of thousands of vehicles on the road around the world gathering data on road conditions and traffic, enabling companies like Luminar to launch self-driving vehicle features in a broader range of markets.

It takes hundreds of thousands of vehicles to get to the global level of data that is needed.

It takes hundreds of thousands of vehicles to get to the global level of data that is needed. You don't have to pay drivers. The people that are driving the cars already allow it to continue to improve and get better.

This isn't the first time that a Daimler-owned company has bought shares. Daimler Trucks, a division of Mercedes-Benz, bought a minority stake in the company in 2020.

A number of companies have committed to purchase lidars. The company has deals with a number of companies, including Mercedes-Benz. There is a chance that lidar may have a partnership withTesla, despite Musk's disdain for lidar as a "crutch" and a "fool's errand".
