Ryan Reaves, a quick-witted forward, was brought to the New York Rangers in the off-season to provide a few laughs on the bench.

The veteran didn't have a goal in his first 32 games. It was a different story in Game No. 33.

Reaves said he didn't really change much. I had a bad nap before the game, but I felt good.

It showed.

The 6-foot-2 Reaves scored the first two goals of his Rangers career after scoring just one last season for the Vegas Golden Knights.

Reaves said that he had been taking his vitamins.

With a Madison Square Garden crowd at a playoff pitch, the Rangers rallied from a 2-0 and a 3-1 deficit in the first period to improve to 26-10-4 and move ahead of the Carolina Hurricanes for first place in the Metropolitan Division.

I think we know it. Reaves said that the Rangers should be considered among the best teams in the league if some of the league doesn't believe it. "We're going to keep doing what we're doing and the results don't lie."

It wasn't all Reaves against the Maple Leafs. Ryan Strome had a goal and an assist, and Jacob Trouba and Artemi Panarin each added two assists for New York. Over the final two periods, Shesterkin stopped 27 shots.

The Maple Leafs, who are still missing some regulars due to COVID-19 protocols, got two goals from Michael Bunting and one fromMitch Marner. Jack Campbell made 21 saves.

The crowd chanted "I-gor" when Shesterkin stopped William Nylander on a break in the third period.

Strome put the Rangers in front. The puck went to Strome on the right side, and he put it in before Campbell could get to it. Strome had nine of the season.

After Jacob Trouba's shot from the right point was blocked, Chris Kreider scored from the left side on a rebound.

Even for those Rangers who find their name on the score sheet, they knew what the difference was.

Strome said the fourth line. The whole game they were the only line that was able to get in there and forecheck and create turnovers and have sustained zone time. We fed off that.

Matthews, who had scored in 10 straight road games, had a chance to extend his streak when the puck went off his skate and into the net, but it was waved off after officials determined he made a distinct kicking motion.

The Hurricanes will play the Rangers in North Carolina. Reaves doesn't think it's a good idea to come off a victory like this.

He said it shows that we can hang with the big boys. We have to keep beating the playoff teams. We've talked about that, but I think we're proving to the league that we're a contender.
