The second round of the Australian Open saw a match between Alize Cornet and Garbine Muguruza. There is a time and a place.

The Australian Open started with surprises on Thursday. Just minutes after Kontaveit lost, Muguruza became the highest-seeded player to exit.

In a 6-3, 6-3 defeat against Alize Cornet in the second round of the Australian Open under a bright blue and cloudless sky, Muguruza never managed to earn a single break point and made a whopping 33 unforced errors, more than twice her opponent's total.

I was surprised by my level. Muguruza, who won the season-ending WTA Finals in 2021, said she was a little disappointed. I feel like my shots weren't as precise. I feel that my game was not aggressive today.

The result was unexpected, as Muguruza is a two-time Grand Slam champion and a two-time major runner-up.

And the 61st-ranked Cornet? She has appeared in 63 major tournaments, but has never made it past the fourth round.

On the Frenchwoman's birthday, Saturday, she will get a chance to equal that showing.

She called herself a dinosaur.

"I don't know how long I have left," she said. Today was a perfect gift for me and I hope the journey will go even farther for me.

The start of this season was a bit of a stress because she was away from her support team for two weeks.

Kontaveit, who lost to Muguruza in the title match, was beaten by a teenager.

"I didn't think I had to win, but I did think I could win," said Tauson, who will face Danielle Collins in the third round. "I can win, but we'll see what happens."

Iga Swiatek, the 2020 French Open champion, defeated Rebecca Peterson in the first round. Marketa Vondrousova, the runner-up at the French Open, defeated Liudmila Samsonova in the second round.
