Instagram is testing paid subscriptions with a small group of creators

Users in the US will soon be able to subscribe to a small number of creators to get exclusive content and features. The company says it will be adding more creators in the coming weeks as it launches a test of subscriptions.

10 creators are part of the early test, including basketball player Sedona Prince.

Fans will pay a monthly fee to access exclusive Lives and Stories from creators they follow. Subscribers will get a purple Badge by their usernames that shows their status to the creator. The creators can choose the price point for their subscription. According to the co-head of product, there will be no cut of creators' subscription revenues until at least 2023.

The creators are part of the early test.

The CEO of Meta wrote in a Facebook post that he was excited to keep building tools for creators to make a living doing creative work and to put these tools in more creators' hands soon. Facebook has a subscription program for creators.

In a video today, Adam Mosseri says that subscriptions are one of the best ways to have a predictable income. Some creators are charging fans a fee for access to their stories on the platform. In the year 2021, some companies introduced subscription models to compete with platforms like TikTok, while others offered additional subscriber content off- platform.
