What's Notch to Like? Samsung Accidentally Leaks Its New Flagship Galaxy Tab

Despite mocking the display notch when it first appeared on the iPhone X, the company now thinks they don't look so bad on tablets.

A picture of the upcoming Tab S8 Ultra was briefly displayed on a support page for Bixby, which was spotted by 91Mobiles. This is the first flagship device from the company that features one.

The cutout sits at the top of the display when in landscape orientation, and is said to house two 12-megapixel selfies cameras, with the second sensor potentially being ultra-wide for group selfies. It's possible that the company chose to place the cameras prominently in a notch as a form of visual branding, or that it has prioritized ultra- slim bezels which don't provide enough space to house the cameras.

The notch on the screen looks similar to the displays on Apple's latest MacBook Pro models, except the cutout stays at the top of the screen, whereas on a tablet the notch will switch location depending on the held orientation.

Apple is expected to replace the notch on the iPhone 14 Pro with hole-punch and pill-shaped cutouts in the display, which is a result of the company working to reduce the size of the notch on previous models. For the iPad Pro models, Apple has avoided the notch by hiding the camera sensors in the bottom of the screen, and for devices that have Face ID, it has opted for Touch ID in the power button.

MacRumors has seen concept renders of a future iPad with a notch at the top of the display when it is held in portrait orientation. We don't expect Apple to adopt a design that takes advantage of what is already an unobstructed display because the sources were not reliable. The different use cases for iPad have been factored in by Apple, with users changing the screen orientation of the device more often than they do with a phone.

The image is of the upcoming Tab S8 Ultra.

The Tab S8 Ultra has a resolution of 2,960 x 1,848, a 120Hz refresh rate, and an under-screen fingerprint sensor. The S Pen stylus support and optional 5G support are expected to be included in the Android tablets.

The Tab S8 and Tab S8 Plus are rumored to be part of the new Tab S8 and Tab S8 Plus lineup, which is thought to include the Ultra device.
