His representatives at TAA PR confirmed that he died in New York, applauding the "indomitable" and "larger-than-life" figure who oversaw Vogue's ascendance as "the world's fashion bible."

In a career that spanned five decades, a rare Black man leading in an elitist field dominated by white men and women championed diversity on the runway and in magazine pages, working with and befriending the likes of Andy Warhol, Yves Saint Laurent, Karl Lagerfeld and Diane von Furstenberg.

A towering figure at 6-foot-7, he was a regular fixture in the front row of the prestigious fashion shows and also worked at Women's Wear Daily and Interview.
A judge on the reality show America's Next Top Model, as well as the artistic director of the online retailer Zappos, were among the things that she did.
The French government gave him the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2021, which he described as the best day of his life.

After moving to New York in 1974, he was raised in North Carolina during the Jim Crow era. In New York, he worked his way up through the fashion industry and helped dress some of the world's most recognizable figures, including first lady and model Naomi Campbell. His memoir, The Chiffon Trenches, was a New York Times best seller. The relationship between Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and her close friend, the fashion designer, was documented in many pictures, however it later soured, as recounted by the author in his book.

There is a structure called the Tangent.

Industry figures and celebrities have paid tribute to a person. Edward Enninful, the first Black person to be editor-in-chief of British Vogue, said that there would be no me without you. Thank you for paving the way. He was described as a force of nature by Supermodel Milla Jovovich, as well as by Belgian designer Diane von Furstenberg, and as a trailblazer and journalist by costume designer AriannePhillips.
