Lusia Harris was the only woman drafted into the NBA in 1977. She was 66 years old.

She will be remembered for her charity, her achievements on and off the court, and the light she brought to her community, the State of Mississippi, her country as the first woman ever to score a basket in the Olympics, and to women who play basketball around the world.

After the New Orleans Jazz selected her in the seventh round of the 1977 NBA draft, Harris turned down the chance to play in the NBA. She was pregnant at the time.

When she was told she had been drafted by the Jazz, she asked if it was a men's team.

The United States won a silver medal at the 1976 Montreal Games, and the first woman to score a basket at the Olympics, thanks to the three-time All-American at Delta State. Pat Summitt, Nancy Lieberman and Ann Meyers were also on that team.

There were many things I appreciated about my time at Delta State. One of my favorite parts was the chance to learn of and appreciate Lusia Harris.
