Pfizer released three laboratory studies Tuesday showing Paxlovid is effective at treating the omicron variant of the coronaviruses, despite uncertainty over whether other common Covid-19 treatments work against it.

Pfizer said in a press release that one of the lab studies found that nirmatrelvir was effective at staving off anidase that the coronaviruses needs to replicate in both the omicron variant and the original variant.
The statement said that the drug showed similar activity against previous coronaviruses.
A third study conducted by Pfizer and New York's Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai found that Paxlovid was needed to be effective against previous versions.
Pfizer said last month that Paxlovid is effective at preventing hospitalization or death in high-risk Covid-19 patients.
Paxlovid will be delivered to the U.S. government in 20 million treatment courses.
