YouTube will stop making most original shows

A significant portion of the original content produced by YouTube will be scaled back. Robert Kyncl, the chief business officer for YouTube, made the changes today.

The company will only fund originals in the YouTube Kids Fund and the Black Voices Fund going forward.

With rapid growth comes new opportunities and now our investments can make a greater impact on even more creators when applied towards other initiatives, like our Creator Shorts Fund, Black Voices Fund, and Live Shopping programming to name a few.

Over the past six years, there were few titles that looked like hits.

Throughout the years, the approach to YouTube has changed. It began in 2016 with scripted shows and movies focused on creators, like Scare PewDiePie. The first season of originals on YouTube had 250 million views. The company began to focus on ad-supported content with celebrities, like Kevin Hart, for free.

Over the course of six years, there were few titles that looked like hits. It was not clear what the original programming provided to a service that is already one of the most popular video destinations in the world.

The decision to scale back the division was made due to the announcement that Daniels will leave the company in March.

The new original programs were announced as recently as last year. YouTube will contact creators in the coming days to honor existing commitments for shows in progress.
