Air India, ANA, JAL, Emirates Cancels All B777 Flights to US Due to 5G Roll Out

Air India, ANA, Emirates, and Japan Airlines are among the airlines that have canceled most B777 flights this week due to concerns about how 5G will affect jet instruments.

The C-band frequencies used by radio altimeters on aircraft are similar to those used by the high-speed 5G cellular network. Top US airlines have warned that the rollout near airports could interfere with equipment that planes use to take off and land.

B777 was affected.

Notices of restrictions on operations at airports were issued by the FAA last week. Boeing told airlines that it does not recommend landing the aircraft at these airports.

The FAA said in a statement on Monday that it will ensure that the traveling public is safe as 5G is deployed. The FAA is working with the aviation industry and wireless companies to try to limit 5G-related flight delays.

FAA Precautions for B787.

FAA requires precautions for Boeing landings after 5G launches. The FAA said that 5G interference could prevent the engines and braking systems from transitioning to landing mode, which could prevent an aircraft from stopping on the runway. The directive requires crews to be aware of the risk and to adopt specific safety procedures when landing on these runways.

Roughly 650 passengers were affected by the cancellation of 10 flights connecting Tokyo with Los Angeles and New York. There were 10 cargo flights that were called off.

The ANA says that Boeing planes can be affected by equipment adjustments.

ANA said that it will consider using the 787 aircraft for future flights on the affected routes after it decided to cancel flights that cannot be switched to the new plane.
