US Airlines Warn of Impending 5G Flight Disruption - BBC

Excerpt from the radio station.

The switch-on of 5G mobile phone services will cause major disruption to flights according to the 10 biggest US airlines.

They said the start of the mobile phone services would cause an economic calamity.

Airlines fear that 5G signals will disrupt planes' navigation systems.

The letter was sent to US aviation authorities.

The chief executives of American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines said that immediate intervention is needed to avoid significant operational disruption to air passengers, shippers, supply chain and delivery of needed medical supplies.

The letter outlining their concerns was seen by the BBC. It was sent to the head of the FAA, the chair of the FCC, and the director of the National Economic Council.

The situation is described by the US government as a "very fluid situation".

The airlines want 5G signals to be excluded from two miles of airport runways.

This will allow 5G to be deployed while avoiding harmful impacts on the aviation industry, travelling public, supply chain, vaccine distribution, our workforce and broader economy.

They asked the FAA to identify those base stations that need to be addressed to ensure safety and avoid disruption.

These concerns were recently highlighted by the two big planemakers in a rare joint warning.

There are a lot of planes that may need to be grounded indefinitely, according to the group of airlines.

Tens of thousands of Americans could be stranded overseas due to the lack of usable wide-body aircraft.

The commercial success of IATA's products and services allows the association to deliver critical activities on which the global air transport industry relies. Standards setting and advocacy to help the industry achieve net zero carbon emissions are examples. Walsh said he has every confidence in Frederic's success.

Leger was part of the start-up team of the consumer packaged goods industry.

The Caribbean Tourism Organization is positive about the continued rebound of the tourism industry despite the uncertainty caused by the ongoing Pandemic.

Over the past eighteen months, Caribbean destinations have shown their resilience in creating strategies for recovery, incorporating frequently updated travel protocols, and collaborating with regional and international partners in the areas of health and economic support and development. Recovery has taken place while ensuring the health and safety of residents and visitors alike.

There is light at the end of a long tunnel which began in March 2020 and has been given an indication by the year 2021. The Caribbean saw a jump in tourist arrivals in the third quarter of 2021, almost three times the arrivals for the whole of the previous year. The progress continued through the last quarter, according to preliminary reports. It is estimated that tourist arrivals will exceed 2020 levels by 70 to 60 per cent.

We are heartened by the recovery experiences and lessons learned in the year 2021, as we begin to grapple with the effects of a new variant which is also affecting international travel adversely.

The lessons learned from these experiences have taught us that travel andhospitality can coexist with the Pandemic affecting our destinations and markets. The exceptional results recorded in the summer to year-end period of 2021, show that a scaled or gradual rebound is likely and very possible by the end of 2022, even though the results to date have not indicated a return to 2019.

Recovery strategies, continuously being adapted to existing circumstances, based on continued partnerships and collaboration, advocating for safe and healthy visitor experiences and prioritising the health of residents, have proven to be the formula for recovery of the sector.

The Caribbean is being observed as the year of wellness in the year of 2022, with a focus on renewal. Visitors to our shores will find endless options to be rejuvenated in the Caribbean. Caribbean nationals are encouraged to explore and rediscover the diversity within their own destinations.

As we work on our short-term strategies for recovery of the sector, we urge longer term approaches to promote sectoral sustainable. We encourage moving towards social inclusion and creating smart destinations based on smart businesses as a key plank of our World Tourism Day message. The success of the sector depends on our human resources. The CTO wants to build on a regional study of human resources to maintain excellence.

Our ability to surpass the global growth average for arrivals shows that there is a demand for the region's tourism product. It is our responsibility to make sure that the region continues to meet this demand in new and refreshed ways.
