Everton: Wayne Rooney & Frank Lampard among contenders for managerial vacancy

Wayne Rooney has been in charge of Derby County for just over a year while Frank Lampard has been out of management since he was sacked.

Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard are in the running to become the next manager of the Toffees after an initial move for Roberto Martinez ended in frustration.

The man is out of work after being fired by the company.

Rooney is in charge of Derby.

Despite being the first of five managers to be sacked by Farhad Moshiri, the hierarchy of the club still admires Belgium coach Roberto Martinez. The Belgian FA insisted that the 48-year-old would not be allowed to leave.

It's not clear if the club will return to RobertoMartinez, who was the subject of protests and fan fury when he first arrived, but other options are being looked into.

Rooney has been in the thoughts of the board since the departure of the former manager.

The club must now decide whether or not to pursue Rooney, who has impressed against a backdrop of financial meltdown and points deductions at second-bottom Derby, despite being off limits.

It's possible to move for a man who had an impressive first season at the club when he took them into the FA Cup Final and into the group stages of the European Championship.

The trio are not the only targets that have been assembled byEverton. Slaven Bilic, a former Croatia and West Ham manager, and a former coach of the German team, are also being considered.

The search for a new manager was expected to be completed before the home game against Villa, but that has now been delayed.

Duncan Ferguson, who took training on Tuesday and has designs on the role himself, is likely to take charge on an interim basis.
