Google’s ‘Self Share’ tool could make you stop emailing yourself files

It can still be difficult to send a file from a phone to a laptop even in 2022. While most of us will use email or uploading a file to cloud storage to send files to ourselves, it seems that Google is working on a way to make it easy to send files to yourself.

Nearby Share is a competitor to Apple's AirDrop that allows you to easily send files to nearby devices. It is not convenient when you are trying to share files with your own devices. The experimental flag in Chrome called "Self Share" is pretty self-explanatory.

You should be able to see a new option in the share menu once the flag is enabled. Like regular Nearby Sharing, Chrome OS would choose the best way to send the file so it arrives as quickly as possible.

It will be a while until regular users have access to it, but it is a welcome addition. It is not hard to imagine that the feature will be expanded to other devices. It is reasonable to assume that the company would want to offer similar self-sharing features eventually as well, since it was announced that Nearby Share was coming to Windows.

I am more interested in this feature than regular Nearby Share. I send myself files more often than other people because I am a homebody living through a Pandemic. When I send a file to someone else, I usually have time to send it to cloud storage or email. When I send something to myself, I am more concerned with sending the file quickly. The feature should be easy to implement and worth our time.
