The world's largest iPhone factory is offerings $1,500 signing bonuses — more than a month's salary — to lure workers amid China's Omicron lockdowns

The central Chinese city of Zhengzhou, also known as the iPhone city, is said to be offering signing bonuses of more than a month's wages to Apple suppliers.

The South China Morning Post reported that returning workers will receive a sign-on bonus of 9,500 Chinese yuan, while first-time employees will receive a sign-on bonus of 9,000 Chinese yuan.
Half of the world's iPhone production takes place at the Zhengzhou production site, according to the SCMP.

The surge in the Omicron variant of the coronaviruses in Zhengzhou, located in Henan province, has led to a surge in the hiring bonuses of Foxconn. There are travel restrictions for those entering and leaving the area, which limits hiring, as parts of the city are under a lock down.

The Yicai news outlet reported last week that the outbreak had not affected production at the Zhengzhou factory.

The Chinese New Year, which starts on February 1, complicates the factory's hiring plans. Tens of millions of Chinese travel back to their hometowns to spend the festival with their families and take off days or weeks from work. Many offices are closed for a week.

Apple sold 40 million iPhone 13s over the holiday season, according to a report. In the fourth quarter of last year, demand outpaced supply by 12 million units.

Insider asked for comment from Foxconn, but they didn't reply immediately.
