Logitech’s Pen is a durable stylus made for Chromebooks in the classroom

Thanks to USI support, the Logitech Pen doesn't need to be pair. It won't work on every Chromebook.

It's Logitech.

The best option for classrooms with Chromebooks is the new stylus from Logitech called Pen. Unlike many rubber-tipped styli, the Pen is an active stylus that supports the Universal Stylus Initiative (USI) standard, which means it will work out of the box on a number of recent Chromebooks.

The pen will work with a Chromebook if it is mentioned. More models will be added to the USI standard as more manufacturers move forward with it.

The Pen can be charged via a port located where you would find a traditional pencil, and it can last up to 15 days of regular school use, though that claim assumes your student is using it for about 2.5 hours a day with its smart sleep. 30 minutes of use can be achieved with a 30-second charge, and it can be used while the device is being charged.

The Pen isn't a consumer-facing device so don't expect it in stores. IT managers in your districts will be able to inquire about orders through the site of the education tech company, and shipping will start in April 2022. Each Pen costs $64.99, but it isn't allowing piecemeal purchases yet. You will have to place a larger order.

It is true that the first company to release a USI compatible stylus is Logitech, but it is not the most affordable or the most capable. The same 4,096 levels of pressure and support for the USI standard can be found in the $34.99 USI Pen that is available for purchase here. The Pen is more of a staple for the classroom with its design. There is a Pen loop that can be stuck to the lid of a Chromebook display for easy storage, and yellow splashes of color that are meant to be reminiscent of a pencil. The grip on the pen is made ofSilicon to make it feel comfortable.

We had a chance to try out the Pen on an higher-end Chromebooks that is compatible with the USI standard. The larger, triangle-shaped design of the Pen might make it easier for younger hands to grip, as it worked very similar to the Penoval USI stylus in terms of lag and writing dynamics. It doesn't have buttons or an eraser tip on the top, which is not compatible with some USI Chromebooks. It is clear that Logitech prioritized simplicity over features here.

The Pen is able to survive up to four-foot drops, according to the company. It is spill- resistant. The Pen tip is built in such a way that students who have trouble pulling it out shouldn't be able to. Each stylus is backed by a three-year warranty from Logitech.

It would be great if this one was made available to more than just educators. The company did not hint at an eventual widening of its availability. Maybe that will change once it launches in April 2022.
