The San Jose franchise record for goals in a game was set by Timo Meier, who scored five times in a win over the Los Angeles Kings.

The sixth-year winger made his first All-Star team this season and scored a hat trick before the first period ended. He scored his fifth goal just 27 seconds into the second period, breaking the Sharks' record.

Bob Boughner said that Timmy deserved all the credit.

Quietly the subject of some trade rumors while San Jose looked to trim payroll and turn the corner on a rebuild, Meier has rewarded the Sharks' loyalty with a great season.

The Sharks are in the running for the final wild-card spot in the conference with a 21-18-2 record, and have a hold on the West's final wild-card spot with 44 points. There are several teams behind them that have games in hand on San Jose. For now, the Sharks feel fine, and they have a lot to do with it.

"I always want to score, but you don't think about how many goals you have in the game," he said. You just want to win. My linemates made some great passes.

Fans are chanting "Timo! At different points throughout the third period, Meier had a chance for his sixth goal when he took the puck down the left side with open ice ahead of him, but Kings defenseman Mikey Anderson knocked the puck from his possession as he approached the net.

Boughner said that if you put in the work, you get paid back. The way he scored, the way he picked the shot. Those were goals.

The talking points from his performance could be used in a press release. No Swiss-born player had ever scored more than three goals in a single game, and he was unstoppable. He became the second player in Los Angeles' franchise history to score five goals against the Kings. He has at least one point in seven of his last eight games.

"Timo's hard to play against," San Jose's defenseman said. He finds open areas and is doing it at a consistent level. He had a lot of potential.

The NHL record for most goals in a single game is held by Joe Malone. Seven players have had at least six goals in a game.

The last NHL player to score five goals in a game was Mika Zibanejad of the New York Rangers. The 11th single-period hat trick in Sharks history was scored by Meier.

The Sharks had scored just one goal in their past two games, and Tomas Hertl had four assists. The 500th assist of the career was provided by Karlsson, as well as a goal and assist by Balcers.

In his postgame interview, Hertl was asked if he had any advice for his teammate. "Just keep shooting," he said.

James Reimer made his first start in over a month for San Jose and made 39 saves.

Los Angeles had a four-game winning streak snapped.
