Stephen Jones 'very confident' Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy will return

Stephen Jones, the Cowboys executive vice president, ended any speculation about McCarthy's job status on Monday.

Jones was asked by The Fan in Dallas if he was confident that McCarthy would continue to lead the team in 2022. Very confident.

Jerry Jones was not willing to speak about McCarthy's role going forward, but he was not happy with how the team played in the 23-17 loss.

"I'm not going to talk about any of those things," Jerry Jones said. That is not on the table. The game speaks for itself. The way our team fought back and got back in the game gave us a chance to give a shot, even though the score was not indicative of the game. This is one of the best groups of players that I've been around.

One of Jerry Jones' biggest regrets was firing Chan Gailey after two seasons in the late 1990s. The team that made the playoffs in 1998-99 was in decline after a Super Bowl run. The Cowboys went 5-11 in three straight seasons after the dismissal of Gailey.

McCarthy has a regular-season record of 18-15 in two seasons, including a 12-5 mark in 2021.

McCarthy talked to the Joneses after the 49ers loss.

McCarthy said he didn't have any concerns about his future. I'm proud to be here. I'm proud of my football team.

Stephen Jones expressed regret over fans throwing debris on the field when the officials ruled the game was over after the clock ran out.

Stephen Jones said that it was unfortunate. I don't see that way for our fans. I think we are a class act. I don't think there is a place for that. I don't understand people throwing things onto the field because they could get hurt. There's no place for that.
