The Las Vegas Raiders have fired general manager Mike Mayock after three tumultuous seasons that produced a combined record of 25-24 and numerous on- and off-the-field controversies.
Mike Mayock was relieved of his duties as General Manager of the Las Vegas Raiders. The team thanked Mike for helping to form the foundation for the franchise to build upon.
The Raiders have begun the process of finding his replacement, requesting an interview with the New England Pats' director of player personnel, according to a source.
The Raiders are looking for a new head coach. Interim coach Rich Bisaccia said Monday he had preliminary conversations with team owner Mark Davis about possibly getting the job full-time. A source said the Raiders requested an interview with Jerod Mayo.
Two days after the Raiders' playoff exit, Mayock's firing came.
After 15 years as a draft analyst and analyst for the NFL Network, Mayock was hired as the Raiders' general manager.
According to Davis, the power structure gave the advantage to Gruden when it came to decision-making. Mayock's advantage over the interim coach grew after the email scandal.
Mayock had to navigate the team through the death of a woman and her dog in a car crash and the release of the first-round draft pick.
The Raiders have missed far more often than not on their 23 combined picks in the three drafts of Mayock and Gruden.
Four of Las Vegas' top five picks in the 2020 draft were gone in less than a season and a half, with Ruggs and Arnette joined by Lynn Bowden Jr. Heading into that draft, Mayock said the Raiders would have three more starters if they did their job right.
The three picks were receiver Bryan Edwards, quarterback Bobby Bowden, and kicker Chris Muse.
The Raiders had three first-round picks a year ago, and used them on a defensive end, a running back and a strong safety. Jacobs has a pair of 1,000-yard rushing seasons and a Pro Bowl nod on his resume, but his production has slipped drastically this season, and while he can be effective against the run, he is a detriment against the pass.
The Raiders used the 17th pick on Alabama offensive lineman Alex Leatherwood, who many had with a second-round grade. He was moved to right guard in Week 5 because he was struggling at right tackle.
The Raiders have found some starting players in lower-round picks with Mayock as GM, such as defensive end Maxx Crosby and slot receiver Hunter Renfrow.
Mayock's Raiders career got off to a rocky start with the Antonio Brown episode, with the GM fining him for missing training camp practices and Brown posting the fine letters on his social media. Brown was released by the Raiders without ever playing a down for the team.
