The transfer portal was used by the coach to bring back a former player.

Hunter Johnson, a onetime top recruit, will return to the school he attended as a quarterback. The move was reported by a website.

D.J. Uiagalelei struggled a year ago and the team lost three games and failed to win the conference title. The four-star quarterback will compete for reps this spring.

In the past, Swinney has avoided adding transfers and was vocal in his frustration this season when he was asked why he didn't use the portal to add depth to a team that lacked experience in several key areas.

"I wouldn't do anything differently," he said. I'm not opposed to the transfer portal. If I was at another school, I might not have signed anything. We've been able to sign great kids that we believe in, because I'm at the school. We'll use the portal if we need to. I'm not going to do something just to do something.

Johnson was a member of Brownsburg (Indiana) High. He was rated the top pocket passer by the network. He was the third-string quarterback as a true freshman, but he decided to transfer in the spring of 2018?

Johnson played in 10 games at the school. He only won two of those starts, completing just 42% of his throws with eight touchdown and eight interceptions.

Johnson said he was going to apply to the business school at the school and had approached the coach about becoming a graduate assistant. He asked if he'd be willing to play another season.

"I'm really looking at this as an opportunity to come in and help the team in any way I can," Johnson said.

He said he will join the school in May.

Taisun Phommachanh entered the transfer portal in December.
