4th Vaccine Shot Likely ‘Not Good Enough’ To Protect Against Omicron, Israeli Researcher Says

An Israeli researcher studying the Covid-19 vaccine said Monday that a fourth dose may not provide enough protection against the omicron variant.

The fourth dose of the Covid-19 vaccine will be given to Moshe Geva Rosso on December 31, 2021.

Prof. Gili Regev-Yochay, the director of Sheba Medical Center, said that the fourth dose increased the amount of anti- Covid-19 that protects against the omicron variant, but it is not good enough to completely protect against an infection from the omicron variant

The number of infections with the omicron variant was lower among those who received a fourth shot than among those who didn't, according to the Times of Israel.

The Times of Israel reports that it is likely that the fourth dose should only be given to people who are at the highest risk.

The fourth shot is highly protective against severe illness from the variant, though the data from the trial was not released.

The Sheba Medical Center studied 154 people who received four doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine and 120 people who received three Pfizer doses and one Moderna dose, according to the Times of Israel.

The findings have not been published or peer reviewed.

The increase in antibodies from the fourth shot is probably not enough for the omicron. Even if it's a good vaccine, the level of antibodies needed to protect against omicron is too high.

The number is big.

More than half a million. According to the Times of Israel, there have been at least four vaccine doses received by Israelis so far. Only people who have been diagnosed with an immune deficiency can be eligible for the extra shot.

The key background.

Israel was the first country to introduce fourth vaccine shots in late December, and several other countries have followed suit. The U.K. Health Security Agency found that the initial booster shot is less effective at preventing infections than the fourth shot. Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said last week that he still doesn't know whether there is a need for the shots since their effectiveness hasn't been fully studied. Israel Association of Public Health Physicians chairman Professor Hagai Levine told the New York Times in December that before giving a fourth shot, it was better to wait for the science.

What to watch for.

Pfizer/BioNTech plans to have an updated version of their vaccine ready in March. Bourla said last week at the J.P. Morgan healthcare conference that it could be better to give that than a fourth shot of the vaccine.

There is a structure called the Tangent.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would be asked by the state of West Virginia to start giving fourth shots. Rochelle Walensky, director of the CDC, said during a recent press briefing that the agency needs to maximize the protection of the tens of millions of people who are eligible for a third shot before we start thinking.
The Israeli study shows that the fourth shot of the vaccine isn't as effective.

Israeli trial, world's first, finds 4th dose not good enough.

Pfizer CEO is unsure whether the vaccine shots are necessary.

The 4th Covid Vaccine Dose will be offered by the first country in Europe.

Will the states offer the 4th covid vaccine? West Virginia is the first state to ask the CDC for permission.
