There were big changes in the AP Top 25. A familiar team returned to the top.

The Associated Press men's college basketball poll released Monday shows that Gonzaga is the top ranked team. The top spot was taken by the Bulldogs, who had 25 first-place votes, 11 fewer than the second-ranked Tigers.

After moving up two spots, auburn has its highest ranking since 1999. The top five were: Arizona, Purdue, Baylor and Arizona.

After losing to Alabama, the West Coast's top team has won seven games in a row.

The rest of the AP Top 25 did not fare well, with 13 teams losing. The teams lost to unranked opponents.

Texas Tech and Oklahoma State defeated the Bears. It was the first time in nearly six years that the Bears lost consecutive home games.

USC's perfect season came to a crashing end with losses to Oregon and Oregon State sandwiched around a win over Oregon. The Pirates lost to DePaul and Marquette and dropped out of the poll.

Bears senior Matthew Mayer said that the coaches at the school were not very happy.

Neither is UCLA's. The Bruins dropped six spots this week after losing to Oregon in overtime. The 700th win of Dana Altman's career dropped UCLA six spots to ninth in this week's poll.

UCLA coach Mick Cronin was incensed that his team was either arrogant or hungry because they had not won a game.

Arizona's rise.

Tommy Lloyd's first season as Arizona's coach was not expected to be a success, as the team was picked to finish fourth in the preseason poll.

The free-flowing offense that the Cats can play has made them one of the nation's top teams.

In a 76-55 win over Colorado last Thursday, the nation's highest- scoring team shot 51% and had 20 assists on 29 field goals. The Utah team was overwhelmed in the paint by the Wildcats during the second half of the game on Saturday.

Arizona climbed three spots in this week's poll to No. 3, its highest ranking since the beginning of the year.

Utah coach Craig Smith said that they are very athletic and very talented.

Falling and rising.

Illinois moved up eight spots after beating Nebraska and Michigan. Kentucky moved up six spots after beating both Tennessee and Commodores.

Wisconsin moved up five places after a win over Ohio State.

USC lost the most places and UCLA was next at six.

Loyola Chicago moved into the poll for the first time this season after victories over Valparaiso and Indiana State. St. John's Red Storm lost to the University of Connecticut 86-78.

Alabama lost to Mississippi State and toAuburn. The two losses to unranked opponents didn't receive a single vote.

The conference watch is on.

The Big Ten and Big 12 had five ranked teams each, followed by the SEC and Big East with four. The American Athletic, West Coast and Missouri Valley are ranked in the Pacific-12.
