As a free agent, Rhodes will be returning to AEW Dynamite this Wednesday.

According to Fightful Select, Rhodes' contract expired at the end of the year in which he was supposed to sign a new agreement. Rhodes is expected to sign a new contract with AEW.

Rhodes has been with AEW since it began and is the current champion. He was advertised for this week's Dynamite after a short absence due to health and safety concerns.

At Battle of the Belts, Sammy Guevara defeatedDustin Rhodes to become the interim champion. He won the interim title in his first defense.

Rhodes is one of the most recognizable faces in AEW, but he is also the most controversial. Fans have soured on Rhodes' attempt to play a lovable babyface and have been increasingly booing him for several months, leading to him playing a tweener role without an actual "turn."

Rhodes will stay in AEW for the foreseeable future. He is a star of his own reality show and The Go Big Show on the WarnerMedia empire. His presence on those shows helps bring together the other programs.

It's likely that it's just a matter of figuring out terms of a new deal.
