How Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray adopted philosophies of his idol, Bruce Lee

6:00 AM

There is a picture of Bruce Lee on the left side of the door in Kyler Murray's bedroom.

Murray stays with his parents when he goes back to his home state to take a break from his duties as the quarterback of the Arizona Cardinals. He sees that picture when he's back home.

It's a reminder of how Murray lives his life in the philosophy of Lee, who died 49 years ago.

Murray's mom tells him to make sure the picture is straight before he leaves his room, otherwise the zen will be off. Bruce Lee's zen is one thing you don't want to disturb in the Murray family. It's everywhere, from the material, which is a Bruce Lee blanket that once hung in Kyler's Oklahoma dorm room to the ethereal, which is an example of someone who helped break cultural.

Kyler's interest in Lee was stimulated by the books and movies of Missy. Kyler has become a Lee follower because of his philosophy, teachings and techniques in football and life to help calm himself and find perspective.

The Los Angeles Rams and the Arizona Cardinals will face off in the wild-card round of the playoffs on Monday, and those philosophies might prove crucial for Murray. The program is on the cable network, ESPN.

Murray and Lee had a shared Asian heritage and shared mental fortitude. Murray and Lee were both of Korean descent.

Shannon Lee, Bruce's daughter, said Lee's philosophy involves "fulfilling your potential". She said that it's a combination of discovering one's self, knowing yourself and then working to improve yourself to become the best, most whole, most alive version of yourself that you can be.

Murray has embraced the idea. Murray's mind was busy ahead of the Cleveland game. He was worried about facing the two talented pass-rushers, Jadeveon Clowney and the other talented quarterback, Baker Mayfield, while also looking across the field at his friend.

Murray depends on Lee's philosophy to help him.

"If I have a tough situation going into a game, it calms me down," Murray said. Bruce's philosophy mellows you out. You mentioned that you've worked on everything. It calms the mental down for me, and it gives you a sense of confidence.

It slows down because you have a lot of things going on.

'Be water'

Kyler Murray and Bruce Lee are on TV.

Lee's philosophy means he has no limitations. One of Lee's most famous teachings is "Be water." Murray has a gold bracelet on his left wrist.

"It's kind of like, don't put yourself in this box despite what everybody says, is basically as simple as I can put it," Murray said. "You have to be versatile."

The undersized quarterback thrives on the field. Murray is aware that his size is supposed to make him less competitive. Murray is a different type of player because of his ability to make plays with his feet and arm.

It's another way Murray finds motivation from Lee, who stood 5-foot-8 yet performed beyond his size, much like Murray has throughout his career.

Bruce Lee's emergence as a singular icon was the result of a journey.
Be Water is available to stream on ESPN+.

When he's asked which quarterbacks he looks up to, Murray gives some of the obvious answers: Michael Vick, Russell Wilson and his father, Kevin Murray, who was a star quarterback at Texas A&M during the 1980s. Murray feels like he can be formless because he's built like them, but he uses those comparisons mostly because he's built like them.

Murray said that he has the ability to be his own mold of a player. I got it on my deal, be water. I live by that. I'm playing against a large group of defenders. I'm the smallest guy on the field most of the time. It's like, if you don't care what people say, go do you, be water, be formless, don't care.

"That's how I see it."

Bruce Lee is a fan.

What would Bruce Lee think about Kyler Murray? Shannon said that her father would think she was awesome. Bruce Lee Archive, "Why wouldn't he?"

Shannon thinks her father would be a fan of Murray's philosophy if he were still alive. Shannon was 4 years old when Bruce died. Shannon found two books about football in her father's library when she was going through it to prepare it for her move to Seattle.

Shannon doesn't think her dad watches much TV, but he was interested in physical movement, because his mom was a big sports fan. Shannon said that he loved talking to people who did other physical disciplines.

Shannon pointed out that football is like organized combat. She thinks Bruce would have loved it.

Which leads to Murray.

Shannon said that he would think he was awesome. Why wouldn't he?

He would like to see how he is applying himself.

Shannon was shown that Bruce Lee's philosophy is still relevant. He was in the middle of developing his philosophy when he was 24.

It's like her world has come full circle, because she was introduced to martial arts as a young girl in South Korea. The more she learned about Lee growing up, the more she admired him. Her famous son, who counts Bruce Lee's daughter among his followers on social media, admires the man she grew up admiring.

"It's a weird feeling," said Missy. "It really is."

Shannon is grateful that Murray has embraced her father, but Murray's appreciation for Lee goes beyond his practice. He was in a 30 for 30 film about Lee. He wears custom thigh pads with Lee's image on them.

Shannon said it was mind-blowing to see a young football player who might not be a Bruce Lee fan. Who isn't a Bruce Lee fan? People like Bruce Lee because he's cool. Usually that's a bit too high. It's in part mind-blowing and part uplifting.

For the next generation.

Kyler Murray shared a post.

Murray has embraced his heritage.

Kevin is black. His mother is half Korean and half Black. His understanding of race, ethnicity, culture and how they all relate to each other and within the confines of society began at home. Missy preached acceptance and talked about race and racism.

Being Asian is a big deal for me because I want to show that I'm both Asian and African American.

Murray doesn't shy away from showing how much of a fan he is of Lee, which is also a public embrace of his Asian heritage.

He wore a black tunic with a mandarin collar and trousers that were similar to what Lee would wear at the game. When he tried on the outfit, he saw it for the first time. She was close to falling to her knees.

I told you to get this suit. I don't care if this is the last one or not. She said you have to get the suit. I'm like, 'This is the Bruce Lee suit.' He said, 'Mom, I know.'

The suit made my heart melt.

Murray knows he's exposing Lee to people who might not know who he is. He's not doing it out of a sense of responsibility because of their Asian heritage.

Murray does it on his own.

Lee's North Star has been his guiding light for football and life.

Murray said that people will start to let him do things because they look up to him. People will watch his videos, movies and stuff, but I don't do it for anyone else other than my mindset and what I go through throughout the day.

Handling the noise.

Kyler Murray is with his parents.

Stephen has been Murray's trainer since he was in high school. Murray doesn't talk about Lee's philosophy or teachings in the gym, but he makes it known he's a fan of the martial artist through his T-shirts.

Lee's philosophy is manifest in how Murray handles the outside noise.

The Bruce Lee philosophy doesn't matter to people who aren't in your circle. That doesn't mean those people don't matter. It just means that they shouldn't have a way to affect you in any way.

"If they say, 'Oh, you can't do this or that because you play bad, you play not to your standards,' and people are going to say what they say negatively, it's the same thing,'" You are like water. The shape of water doesn't change if something is thrown in it. It stays the same and you can't change it for a while. I love that it sits back to calm.

The more Kyler's mom thought about how much Lee has affected him, the more obvious it became.

Is Bruce Lee's philosophy in Kyler today? She said that it was 199%. He's so calm. I interview this child after games because I'm just like, 'How do you stay calm?' When you had two seconds left, how did you do? What were you thinking?

I've called him my little ninja. He adapted to watching Bruce Lee, but we never put them in martial arts.

Shannon has been impressed with how much Murray has embraced her father.

She said that Kyler was doing at such a high level that she wasn't doing that at 24. It is impressive and I think he should be applauded for that because it takes a lot of drive and desire to apply these types of things at such a young age. You haven't lived as much as you could have.

"You have to have a lot of depth in order to key into the philosophy that he has." It requires a lot of awareness, a lot of effort, and a lot of thoughts and words to translate them into action.
